We talk a lot in our shop about the importance of photography. It’s a topic we will cover here at Strategy Session frequently.
It’s that important.
We all know the cliché, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” and we do our best to ensure our mail and mobile ads do say a thousand words through the images we use.
We rely heavily on good photography, both the candidate’s own, quality stock and images we shoot ourselves in-house. We are so committed to using great photos in our mail and mobile ads we have invested in our own photo studio and equipment for professional photographers on staff to use.
When the right shot just doesn’t exist, we create it.
In today’s #askadesigner post, we asked our graphic designer, Kim, to expand on what the characteristics of a great photo are:
“The first characteristic of a beautiful photo is lighting. Harsh lighting can overexpose an image. The ideal lighting is in the shade or overcast sky. The hours closest to sunrise and sunset offer some of the best natural lighting.
“Next is perspective. An interesting perspective is more than just moving the camera closer to or away from the subject. It’s thinking outside the box, shooting from above, shooting from below, or moving your subject near the outside of the frame to give a photo interest.
“Third is texture. An interesting texture in the background of a portrait or a pop of color can provide needed contrast.
“Last is movement and emotion – my personal favorite. Elements like hair blowing in the wind, running, laughing, or dancing creates a candidness that helps a photo tell a story.”
