Best day on the campaign trail?
October 22, 2011. I had worked on successful campaigns, locally and across the country, but not on the scale or magnitude of Governor Bobby Jindal’s 2011 re-election. The countless hours and hard work that went into the largest grassroots operation that Louisiana had ever seen was mentally and physically exhausting. We knew the boss was in the position for a comfortable victory but we never took our foot off the gas. I’ll never forget sitting around a conference table in the war room when the election results finally came in—surrounded by people who poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the campaign. Winning nearly 66% in the primary, it was the largest landslide election in Louisiana gubernatorial history and we all contributed to that historic victory.
Favorite campaign tactic?
I am continuously impressed with campaigns that are creative and effective while working with a limited budget. Whether it be guerrilla marketing, unorthodox yet powerful messaging, or innovative techniques, the successful and surprising strategies leave a lasting impression.
Favorite eats from your home state?
My go-to appetizer in Louisiana has to be the blackened alligator from a restaurant in Baton Rouge called The Chimes. Back in Boston, it’s the Fenway Frank, a Fenway Park exclusive for sentimental reasons more than the taste.
Describe your greatest accomplishment.
In 2004, I embarked on a journey to Louisiana that I thought was just going to be a four-year vacation disguised as college. The first time I’ve ever been to Louisiana was for my LSU orientation. I was in shock the first few days after my parents left me in Baton Rouge – I hadn’t fully realized what I had gotten myself into. Here I was, a “Yankee” in the Deep South, with all my friends and family 1,600 miles away. I learned to be independent, outgoing and responsible very quickly. Four short years later, after countless learning experiences and personal growth, I had my degree and a network of friends and colleagues that will last a lifetime.
What’s your favorite thing about where you live?
It’s hard to pick just one. From the Big Easy, to the waters off Grand Isle, to the stately oaks of the LSU campus, this place has a way of stealing your heart and changing your mind.
Favorite song? And what do you do when it comes on in the car?
Oh man, that’s tough. I listen to everything, including classic rock, rap, and 90’s alternative. I recently started listening to country music, which, growing up in Boston I cringed at the thought, but its got a sneaky way of growing on you. I sing along in my Jeep, but only if I’m alone.
What’s on your bucket list?
Cage dive with a great white shark.
What would you most like to learn how to do?
Learn how to swim fast enough to escape a great white shark.
If you could travel back to any time period, which would you choose? Why?
It might be a cliché, but Philadelphia in 1787. It would be quite an honor to witness the greatest Americans create and sign the U.S Constitution.
