A recent report predicts that online advertising will outpace TV advertising by $40 billion this year after first overtaking TV ad spending last year.
Behind that growth are the videos we have talked about being so important to a successful digital campaign, specifically mobile advertising campaigns. Video ad spending alone is expected to see a 19% jump to $32 billion this year.
In fact, this growth is all taking place on mobile; mobile advertising saw a 25% growth spurt.
As we have seen time and time again, it is the corporate world leading that shift, as too many political campaigns at all levels often remain stuck in the past. (Read more about the dangers of being a part of that flat earth society here.)
The lure of TV advertising continues to pull at the purse strings of many of today’s political campaigns as the corporate world continues to shift away from TV to digital as the top medium.
TV absolutely has a place in political campaigns, but it should not command the same big slice of pie that it did in the early 2000s.
The campaigns that win today will adapt to the changing marketing landscape and use data, targeting, and creativity to ensure they are delivering the right message to the right people at the right time on the right medium.
For many, that won’t – and shouldn’t – be TV.
