Decoration Day was born in the wake of the Civil War, serving for over a century as a grave reminder of the lives lost in battle. After receiving official recognition as a federal holiday in 1971, Decoration Day became Memorial Day – and it continues to serve as a day of remembrance in honor of those who sacrificed their lives in service to our country.
